Step 3: The 5-Step Online Process
Once you have your documents, follow these steps on the official KRA iTax portal. This part usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
Start at the iTax Portal
Go to the official KRA iTax website: itax.kra.go.ke. On the homepage, do not try to log in. Instead, click on the “New PIN Registration” link.
Basic Info (Section A)
Select your “Taxpayer Type” and “Mode of Registration” (choose “Online Form”). Fill in your ID number and Date of Birth. The system will verify your details and auto-populate your name. Fill in your physical address, phone number, and email.
Obligation (Section B)
This is where you declare your tax obligations. You must select at least one. The most common for an individual is “Income Tax – Resident”. Select today’s date or your registration date.
Verify & Submit
The other sections (Source of Income, Agent Details) are often optional. Click “Send OTP” to verify your email address. Enter the code you receive. Finally, solve the simple arithmetic sum (Security Stamp) at the bottom and click “Submit”.
Check Your Email
Success! Your application is processed instantly. Go to your email inbox. You will find a new email from KRA containing your new KRA PIN and your initial iTax Password.
Step 4: After You Register
You’re not done yet! Your final steps are to log in for the first time and download your official certificate.
1. Your First Login
Go back to the iTax portal. This time, enter your new PIN in the “PIN/User ID” field. Click Continue. Enter the password from your email and solve the security stamp. The system will immediately force you to set a new, secure password.
2. Print Your Certificate
After you log in with your new password, you will be at your iTax dashboard. To get the PDF certificate, navigate to the “Registration” menu, then click on “Reprint PIN Certificate”. You can then download and print it.
