How to Buy Tokens via M-Pesa
- Go to your M-Pesa menu and select “Lipa na M-Pesa”.
- Choose “Pay Bill”.
- Enter the KPLC Business Number: 888880 (for prepaid).
- Enter your KPLC Prepaid Meter Number as the Account Number.
- Enter the amount you wish to pay (between KSh 100 and KSh 35,000).
- Enter your M-Pesa PIN and confirm the transaction.
- You will receive a confirmation SMS from M-Pesa and a message from KPLC with your token.
To check your token balance, you need to use the short code specific to your meter type. Here are some of the most common codes.
Common Meter Balance Codes
- 801 For meters where you press 801 and then the “Enter” or “#” button to see the balance.
- 100 For meters where you press 100 and then “Enter” or “#”.
- 000 For some meters, pressing 000 and “Enter” or “#” will show the balance.
- 07 On some meters, pressing 07 and “Enter” displays the remaining units.
Note: These codes can vary. If these don’t work, check the user manual for your specific meter model or contact KPLC for assistance.
Electricity tariffs are tiered and include various charges and levies. Select your customer category to see the detailed rates effective from April 1, 2024.

Other Charges & Levies
In addition to the energy charge, your bill includes fixed charges, levies, and taxes, which are applied to your total energy cost.
- Fixed Charge: A set amount per month (e.g., KSh 173.16 for Domestic).
- EPRA Levy: 3% of (Energy Charge + Fixed Charge).
- REP Levy: 5% of (Energy Charge + Fixed Charge).
- WRA Levy: 1.5% of (Energy Charge + Fixed Charge).
- Fuel Surcharge (F.I.): A variable amount (e.g., 2.3%).
- VAT: 16% applied to the total of all the above charges.
