Understanding Your Investment

A Money Market Fund is a type of Collective Investment Scheme (CIS) that invests in low-risk, short-term debt instruments. These typically include government Treasury Bills, high-quality corporate bonds, and fixed deposits. The primary goals of an MMF are to preserve capital while generating a higher return than a standard savings account. They are known for their high liquidity, meaning you can typically access your money relatively quickly. In Kenya, MMFs are regulated by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA).

While MMFs are considered low-risk, they are not entirely risk-free. It’s important to be aware of the following:

  • Interest Rate Risk: If overall market interest rates rise, the value of the existing, lower-rate bonds held by the fund may decrease.
  • Inflation Risk: There’s a risk that the returns from the MMF may not keep pace with the rate of inflation, meaning your money’s purchasing power could decrease over time.
  • Credit Risk: This is the risk that a corporation or entity that issued a bond held by the fund could default on its payments. MMFs mitigate this by investing in high-quality, investment-grade securities.
  • Liquidity Risk: In rare, extreme market conditions, a fund might face challenges in selling its assets quickly to meet a high volume of withdrawal requests.
